A parent's simple, proactive guide series to care for your TCKs during home assignment

Third culture kids don’t always “go home” when they land in their passport country—they step into a place that may look familiar but feels foreign. Though temporary, a home assignment is a transition. We know you want to support your kids.

Wayfinder: Home Assignment is meant to equip you with simple, proactive tools to guide and care for your family through this season with confidence and care. You will receive access to a new theme every two weeks and can use the material at your own pace. This resource is adaptable for you to use in a way that suits your family best—You know your kids! Home assignments are often reported as the most stressful time in missionary family’s lives, so these tools are designed to be worth while and easy to use.

When you register for Wayfinder, you will immediately receive pre home assignment activities to help your family prepare to leave your host country for a time.

This will be followed by eight themes, each with three types of age-appropriate conversation and activity scripts!

  • Family Routine and Anxiety Prevention
  • Emotions in Transition
  • Safety, Boundaries, and Attachment
  • Grief, Loss, and Remembering
  • Establishing New Supports
  • Family Belonging, Identity, and Story
  • Your Personal Belonging, Identity, Story
  • Celebrating and Stewarding the TCK Experience

Three ways for families to explore each theme

Trail Head

Learning Activity

A short (typically 10–30 minutes) hands-on activity you can do with your child or whole family that helps bring the theme to life. These activities are often playful, creative, and engaging, making it easier for kids (and adults!) to learn by doing. The goal isn’t typically to have a long, serious talk, but to help your family absorb the ideas naturally through shared experience.

Trail Talk

Conversation and Reflection

A simple, easy-to-read prompt designed to help you check in with your child about something related to the theme. Trial Talks will prompt this through conversation and/or reflection. These 10-30 minute prompts are meant to support connection and get your child’s thoughts on an element of the theme. Trail Talks help you guide honest, safe conversations and encourage healthy processing during times of transition.

Local Landmark

Memorable Moments

A longer (30–90 minute) intentional experience designed to help you create meaningful connection and lasting memories with your child during home assignment. These thoughtfully planned activities strengthen attachment, support emotional well-being, and offer positive moments that buffer the challenges of being in a passport country—helping you slow down, be present, and prioritize connection in a busy season.
