Wayfinder: Home Assignments

Proactive guidance for parents of TCKs on home assignment: Because healthy transitions don’t happen by accident.

Launch date: May 2026    |    Investment cost per family: $24

Wayfinder is the first of it’s kind in Home Assignment Care for TCKs—making transition care for ages 2-19 more easily attainable while families are on-the-go.

A parent's simple guiding series to care for your TCKs during home assignment

Third culture kids don’t always “go home” when they land in their passport country—they step into a place that may look familiar but feels foreign.

Though temporary, a home assignment is a transition, and we want to help you support your kids.

Wayfinder: Home Assignments is meant to equip you with simple, proactive tools to guide and care for your family through this season with confidence and care.

  • Home assignments are often reported as the most stressful time in missionary family’s lives, so these tools are designed to be worth while and easy to use.
  • You’ll receive access to a new theme every two weeks and can use the material at your own pace, referring back to old themes as needed.
  • This resource is adaptable for you to use in a way that suits your family best—You know your kids!

Supporting Connection and Dialogue Between Family Members

Helps Parents Meet Their TCKs' Needs in Age-Appropriate Ways

Developed by Leading TCK Experts

Eight Themes

When you register for Wayfinder, you will immediately receive pre home assignment activities to help your family prepare to leave your host country for a time.

This will be followed by eight themes, each with three types of age-appropriate conversation and activity plans!

  • Family Routine and Anxiety Prevention
  • Emotions in Transition
  • Safety, Boundaries, and Attachment
  • Grief, Loss, and Remembering
  • Establishing New Supports
  • Family Belonging, Identity, and Story
  • Your Personal Belonging, Identity, and Story
  • Celebrating and Stewarding the TCK Experience

Three ways for families to explore each theme

Trail Head

Learning Activity

A short (typically 10–30 minutes) hands-on activity that you can do with your child or the whole family that helps bring the theme to life. These activities are playful, creative, and engaging, making it easier for kids (and adults!) to learn by doing. The goal is not to have a long, serious talk, but to help your family absorb the ideas through shared experience.

Trail Talk

Conversation and Reflection

A simple, 10-30 minute, easy-to-read plan designed to help you check in with your child about something related to the theme. Trail Talks will prompt this through conversation and reflection questions. These plans are meant to support connection and get your child’s thoughts and opinions on an element of the theme. Trail Talks help you guide honest, safe conversations and encourage healthy processing during times of transition.

Local Landmark

Memorable Moments

A longer (30–90 minute) intentional experience designed to help you create meaningful connections and lasting memories with your child during home assignment. These thoughtfully planned activities strengthen attachment, support emotional well-being, and offer positive moments that buffer the challenges of being in a passport country—helping you slow down, be present, and prioritize connection in a busy season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this faith-based?
A: Wayfinder: Home Assignments was created by Interaction International and reflects a Christian worldview. At the same time, the plans are designed to support emotional connection and healthy transition in ways that are accessible and respectful of each family’s pace. Families are invited—not pressured—to integrate faith into the experience as it feels appropriate for them.

While the curriculum is faith-based, it is clean—without vocabulary or references to work that would compromise global workers in creative access regions. For those who are extremely careful, you may still choose to avoid it, as there are references to Christian practice or beliefs.

Q: Can we use this if we are not missionaries?
A: Absolutely. The resource is helpful for any parents who have TCKs.

Q: What age range is this designed for?
A: Wayfinder: Home Assignments includes activity and conversation plans tailored for ages 2–6, 7–12, and 13–19. Some plans are written separately for each age group, while others are thoughtfully combined to make things simpler for parents with children in multiple stages.

Q: Does this resource require access to the internet?
A: You will need internet access to receive the email that gives you access to the content. Once you choose which plans you would like to use, you can download them ahead of time (if needed) to use while on the go.

Q: Does this resource require printing?
A: Some activities or conversation plans recommend printing a handout or two. When you register, you will receive access to all printable handouts, so you can print them at once whenever you have access to a printer. You may want to send the files to a family member or friend in your passport country whom you will see within the first week of home assignment. You may also choose to download the PDF and complete the handout together using PDF-editing software. Printing will limit your children’s screen use and provide a more effective hands-on experience.

Q: Does each theme only last for two weeks?
A: You will receive access to a new theme every two weeks, and you will continue to have access to all previous themes as well.

Q: What if life gets busy and we miss a theme?
A: That’s completely okay—and expected. While a new theme becomes available every two weeks, you can move at your own pace, revisit previous themes, or skip one that doesn’t feel especially helpful for your family in that season.

Q: What happens if I don’t register for the resource until after we are on home assignment?
A: You will begin receiving access to the first theme within a day or two.

Q: What if our home assignment is shorter than 16 weeks? We wouldn’t get access to all of the themes before leaving again.
A: Wayfinder: Home Assignments is designed to be most helpful for families on home assignment for 16 weeks or longer. However, the themes are strategically ordered so that the first ones you receive are very relevant for shorter stays too. You will also retain access to the full resource for future home assignments.

Q: What if something hard comes up when using some of this content, and we need more help?
A: Because Wayfinder: Home Assignments is designed to be simple and practical, it can’t cover every possible situation in depth. Each theme includes a list of additional resources to help you go deeper if needed. You’re also welcome to reach out to the email provided throughout the resource with questions or concerns.
